Training Overview
The Fundamentals of Piping Design & Construction course is designed to equip engineers, inspectors, and maintenance professionals with a comprehensive understanding of piping codes, inspection practices, and design calculations.
With a strong focus on ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) and API 570 (Piping Inspection Code), this program blends theory with practical case studies, covering critical topics such as stress values, wall thickness calculations, welding qualifications, corrosion mechanisms, and inspection of buried piping.
Participants will also gain valuable insights into API RP 574, 577, 578 and relevant ASME codes (Section IX & Section V), ensuring they are well-prepared for API 570 certification and day-to-day engineering challenges.
Objectives
- Understand the fundamentals of ASME B31.3 piping design and perform key calculations (wall thickness, blank thickness, and test pressures).
- Apply ASME B16.5 rules for rating and component design.
- Evaluate material selection, impact testing, preheating, and PWHT requirements.
- Interpret and implement API 570 inspection codes: scope, definitions, inspection frequency, testing practices, and repair/alteration requirements.
- Assess corrosion and material degradation mechanisms as outlined in API 571, and apply preventive measures.
- Differentiate between inspection vs. examination in piping integrity management.
- Apply welding inspection principles with API RP 577 & API RP 574, including WPS and PQR verification as per ASME Section IX.
- Select and apply Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) techniques according to ASME Section V.
- Implement Positive Material Identification (PMI) as per API RP 578.
- Prepare confidently for the API 570 certification exam through quizzes, mock tests, and model answers.
Materials Included
- Comprehensive lecture notes on ASME B31.3, API 570, API RP 574, 577, 578, and API 571 and others.
- Case studies covering stress calculations, impact testing, welding, and buried piping inspection.
- Practice quizzes, closed-book and open-book mock exams with model answers.
- Sample WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications) and PQR (Procedure Qualification Records).
- NDE guidelines, inspection checklists, and PMI procedures.
- Corrosion and material degradation study resources (API 571).
Target Audience
This course is ideal for:
- Inspection engineers and QA/QC professionals in oil, gas, petrochemical industries.
- Mechanical engineers working with design, operation, or maintenance of pressure piping.
- Plant engineers, maintenance supervisors, and integrity specialists.
- Welding inspectors and NDE technicians seeking API 570 certification.
- Professionals preparing for API 570 or related ASME code examinations.
Requirements / Instructions
A basic background in engineering is recommended.
Familiarity with ASME/API codes is useful but not essential.
Participants should bring:
